Norwich Olympic Distance Triathlon
The swim was a 1,500m in a U shape with exit half way back along the lake side. Standing at the start on the lake side it was hard to spot all the yellow buoys in the sun rise. One of the other triathletes said just head for the tallest try straight ahead which seemed got landmark to spot before turning back.
For the swim I started towards the left of the start wave, which was the fast side. It was a bit hectic at the start but was a good mass start practice. I left a few meters before I started but I was getting hit for the next few minutes despite it starting to space out already. I got to the turn point quite well with teh earlier sighting tip and made both of the turns at started heading back. Half way down I decided to slow a bit as the person in front had stopped to let about 5 swans swim past I thought I would play it safe and give them some distance. I then picked up the pace again and was easily to spot the swim exit which had a blow up arch. When I got out of the swim I some how dropped my googles in the murky water but grabbed them on first attempt.
T1 was about 100m from the lake exit to my bike but some how managed to take only a few minutes instead of the normal 10!!
The cycle was a gently undulating 39km (24 miles) loop with one stop point. The biggest issue was the slight breeze going across the farming landscape. I decided to give this a big effort and spend a lot of time on my aerobars. When I got to the first hour I had done over 19 miles which was 4 miles more than normal. With just a few miles to go I decided to see how long I could manage this pace for. When I got to the end my average pace was 19.6 mph!!
T2 was a blur just over 1 minute!!
The run was a 11km multi terrain route made up of two laps around the park and lake side. What I was not prepared for was the woodland section, steps and hills. This was even worse due to the fast pace I started the run on assuming it was all flat. I had to walk up the last half of the hill but ran the rest at a fast pace which I managed to maintain a 8:15 minutes/mile pace for the run.
I completed the race in 2:48:29 which was not bad on a hot day. The only time which was average for me was the swim the rest where at least above average. This was shown by my position in each section being lower each time. I quite like the medal we got which was in a cog shape.
More details can be seen on my race report on my blog.

Kit – Reminder and Sizing Chart 12 July 2011
Hi all,
Some of you have been having trouble finding the sizing chart on the
Carvalho website for kit, so please find it attached here. (In your email box for members)
I have not responded to all of your requests yet, but the support for the
kit has been largely positive but we could do with some more responses
please. Many of you have asked to transfer funds already – I thank you for
that but please hold your horses as until I get all the responses in (one
week to go before the deadline please) I do not know that we will have a
valid order.
So, fingers crossed that those of you that haven’t responded yet will do so
with your requests for kit!
Any problems / queries please let me know.
Also, although we were originally asking for short sleeve jerseys, I have
had a few requests for long sleeve ones so will also be pursuing those.
Suggestions for sleeve colours from black, white, blue or pink? Or two
mixed?
Don’t forget to let me have your requests by next Tuesday please.
Thanks
Daryl
Club Events 2011
Thank you to everyone who attended the club meeting on Friday. A really good attendance and lots of enthusiasm now the season is well under way. Good to hear about races completed and what everyone has planned next.
So if you have any spare dates in your training/competition calendar, here are some Basingstoke Tri Squad fixtures to get you out there.
TIME TRIALS
A slight change in format from previous years. We still have 3 different courses to give some variety. But this year we are joining North Hants Road Club who are very experienced at putting on time trials and guiding people through their first if you’ve not tried one before. The format is simple; individual cyclists are started at different slots and then you ride as fast as you can against the clock. As its a staggered start there’s no danger of being trapped in a pack. You are racing solo so it’s about you against you. This is fantastic practice for triathlons where we are effectively doing the same thing and not allowed to draft (slipstream behind other riders). The dates are:
11 August – Mortimer – 10.9 miles
3 September – Dummer – 18.2 miles
2 October – Sydmonton – under a mile hill climb
Mark these dates in your diary. there is a £3 charge. Traditionally we find a local pub with food to round of our evening and reward our efforts. More details to follow, so keep an eye on the site. More details on the time trials and NHRC can be found at http://www.nhrc.co.uk/Welcome.html
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP TRIATHLON
This year we have selected the Reading Triathlon for our club champs. The date is the 12 September. This is our local lake and its great to have an open water swim event right on our doorstep. There is a choice of a sprint or olympic distance. This race has some brilliant reports including from our members.

That’s all for now – happy training!
Race report: Sussex Triathlon – 03/07/2011
“How nice” Ian and I thought, to have a triathlon which starts at such a dignified hour on a Sunday, let’s do that one. The fact that this would mean the race would start in the midday sun had not occurred, nor had the small matter of travelling back to Basingstoke at 5pm on a sunny Sunday afternoon on the M25…. but, by the time you’re parked on aforementioned motorway it’s slightly too late to think about it!
Anyway, this was the inaugral running of the Sussex Triathlon, set in the grounds Ashburnham Place, a lovely country house tucked away in the Sussex countryside near Battle. There were both a sprint and olympic options (relay entries available for both), we opted for the olympic distance.
The swim was in a lake in the grounds, which was lovely. The mass start was hectic with quite a lot of punching, eye gouging and the norm. Ian picked a fight with a girl, and lost! 2 laps on the swim, exiting via the rather disgusting tasting water which was churned up with silt and duck weed. Quite a long run into transition, which was fine with me as it gave me longer to struggle out of my wet suit. Out onto the cycle, which had been advertised as “not difficult, but challenging”. Er, right. Probably the most difficult cycle either of us have ever done in a triathlon!! (Even worse than Swanage or Portland.) It started with the drive to Ashburnham Place. That’ll be needing the small chain wheel then – not the best start when you’ve still got serious oxygen deprivation and quite a lot of lake water in your eyes, ears and nose! The cycle started as it meant to go on – not a flat piece of road in sight. all of it was either up or down hill, mostly along twisty & turny (but very pretty) country lanes with blind corners and lots of LandRovers in the middle of the road!!
2 laps on the bike, then out on the run. This had been advertised as “flat, with the exception of one steep, but short hill 2.5k into each lap”. Whoever wrote that description had clearly been drinking and/or has never actually run on a flat course. This flat run was rather hilly. The “steep, but short hill” looked very similar to the one in the Lord Wandsworth TRXC course AND it was NOT alone – there seemed to be another 4 hills that the race organisers had forgotten to mention. Not to mention the very steep downhill section, which was not a friend to my cramping and broken quads!
This is in no way a PB course – the winning time was around 2 hours and 15 minutes, a good 25 minutes longer that you’d expect in an Olymic distance triathlon.
However, for those who are up for a challenge and happy to race a non-PB course, we would highly recommend this race. The settings were stunning, everything was superbly organised and the marshalls were excellent. The entry fee for the Olympic distance was a snip at £40 for BTF members, with a lovely usable technical t-shirt in the race packs. It was one of the rare races where there was a specified warm up time in the lake, which was a much appreciated chance to cool down. We’ll be doing this one again next year, all other nutters welcome!!!
Approximate Kit Prices – 03 July 2011
As promised, here are the approximate prices for additional Club Kit. I say approximate because the following does not include postage or the possibility of a design charge incurred to transfer the tri-specific design to the cycle-specific templates. (Though last time it was agreed that club funds pay for this – approx £130) Also, I have translated from Euros so this may fluctuate.
The intention is to set us up on the Carvalho-Custom website, where we will be able to order everything up as individuals – this should save chasing time if everyone orders themselves up to a deadline date, at which point Carvalho will start the manufacturing process – a lead time of approximately six weeks, though please note that they have two weeks off in August.
Also please note that for anything ordered in qty less than 5 units, a 50% surcharge will be added to the item. Sorry!
So here are the prices for the items you asked me to look in to (5+ items)
TRI Top Long – £31.71
Cycling jersey, full zip (both male and female cuts) short sleeves – £29.32
Bib Shorts, medium weight – £41.67
Female non-bib shorts – £36.41
I would strongly urge you to have a look at www.carvalhocustom.com to see the website and get a flavour for the quality of the gear, the variety of it and also prices. I have written to Carvalho and asked that we are set up on their website – so more info later!
With thanks
Daryl
