Sport Relief 2012
My name is Heidi and I am 11 years old. I decided to do something for Sport Relief when I saw what David Walliams was doing, it was amazing and completely inspired me to do my bit. I chose a sponsored bike ride because I love cycling. My mum and dad suggested 50 miles but I said that I wanted to do 70! I have been training since January; gradually building up the distance week by week. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without all the support from everyone in the Basingstoke Triathlon Squad and my family; they have been brilliant, giving me lots of encouragement.
The big day arrived, Sunday 25th March, the weather could not have been better with the sun shining all day. I was very excited and also very nervous, but once I started I got in to it and my training paid off. I cycled with Mum and Dad through some of the nicest parts of the Basingstoke country side and surrounding villages. We started from home in Pamber Heath at 9am, heading east across country toward Heckfield and then south through Hook and onto Odiham for the first food stop, at 20 miles, in Lasham where I watched some gliders enjoying the clear blue skies too. The next stage was great because it was mainly down hill and took in the lovely villages of Bentworth and Medstead before following the trail of the watercress beds through Alresford and Itchen Abbas. We were all really pleased to be able to stop and re-fuel in Kings Worthy knowing we were over half way and that Dad’s careful pacing was paying off. Re-charged we headed north through Stoke Charity to Whitchurch. I was starting to feel a bit tired now having been on the bike for over 4 hours and I have to admit I did have a bit of a 50mile plea ‘are we nearly there yet?’ More food at 60miles just south of Hannington gave me just the boost I needed. Spurred on with only ten miles to finish, I kept my legs spinning and my mind on the finish!
Right on time I cycled with Mum and Dad into the Down Grange Sports complex to be greeted by a great cheer from family and friends from the Triathlon Squad and thanks also to my friends at Basingstoke Hockey Club, who welcomed me at the finish with refreshments. It felt brilliant and my Mum and Dad said that they were very proud of me for setting myself such a challenge, training for it and then completing it so well with a smile just about all the way round!
Thank you to everyone who supported and sponsored me I have raised over £300 for Sport Relief.
